A former Atlanta police supervisor robbed a Chicago area bank.

Matteson, Illinois Deputy Chief of Police Robert Dekeikis told reporters that 44-year-old Maurice Dodd robbed a BMO Harris Bank on Nov. 14.

Dekeikis said Dodd walked up to a teller and made demands. An officer stood in line behind Dodd, but didn't know a robbery had happened until she saw the teller hyperventilate and collapse.

"She ran outside, drew a weapon and ordered the subject to stop," said an officer.

Instead, police said Dodd took off on foot with more than $4,000. Police said Dodd then led them on a high speed chase on an interstate.

"We don't want somebody's life to end. We're very thankful that nobody else in the village got hurt. We're thankful that officers did not get hurt and we're thankful this incident is done with," said an officer.

An officer saw Dodd place a gun to his own head and shoot himself. Dodd crashed his vehicle into a pole, and then crashed into a cofield.

The gun officers recovered had an inscription that read "Atlanta Police."

Dodd worked with APD until January 2014. He lost his job after driving drunk. He had been with APD for 12 years.
