COBB COUNTY, Ga. – A 25-year-old man is facing burglary and property damage charges after police say he attempted to steal from a church that had previously provided him with financial assistance.

According to the Marietta Police Department, the investigation began in mid-February when Quintavious Jones approached St. Joseph Catholic Church seeking help to pay for a hotel room.

Authorities say Jones returned to the church about a week later. Surveillance footage reportedly shows him walking through the building before attempting to pry open an offering box using a pair of scissors.

“The suspect wasn’t able to get into the box; however, it was significantly damaged,” said Officer Denise Lozado. “You can see he was trying to take money that had been placed inside.”

Police say Jones came back to the church three days later and again asked for financial assistance. Church leaders contacted authorities at that point.

“The church did want to press charges. He damaged the offering box, which is important to the church and its congregation,” Lozado said.

Jones has since been charged with burglary and criminal damage to property.

Community members expressed disbelief over the incident, particularly given that the church had previously offered help.

“That’s very uncalled-for — repaying kindness with something like that,” said local resident Tan Nguyen.

Another neighbor, Joticia Sarver, called the situation sad. “He was getting help and then burglarized them. Just pray for him,” she said.
