A middle school teacher in California has been placed on administrative leave after a video surfaced that appears to show him urinating into a container inside his classroom shortly before students entered.

The incident allegedly occurred at Granite Oaks Middle School in Rocklin, where eighth-grade history teacher Dan Champ was filmed by a student. In the footage, Champ appears to unbutton his pants and relieve himself into a container positioned out of the camera’s direct view.

School officials confirmed an investigation is underway. Champ has more than 25 years of teaching experience.

The Sacramento Bee, which obtained the video, reported that Champ could be heard saying, “Gosh, that’s good,” repeatedly. He then appeared to empty the container before adding, “Love it, love it.”

Moments later, the class bell rang and students began entering the room.

No students were visible in the classroom during the incident. However, the video began circulating and prompted administrative action after a parent notified school officials.

In a message sent to families, school administrators said:

“This afternoon, after school dismissal, a parent and a staff member informed the School Administration of a video showing an employee engaging in conduct inconsistent with our professional standards.

While the unverified video does not involve any students or other staff, the employee has been placed on leave while Granite Oaks Middle School and the Rocklin Unified School District investigate the incident.

Although we are unable to share specific details, this matter is being taken seriously and will be addressed in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and legal requirements.”

A former student told the Sacramento Bee she had previously heard rumors that Champ used a container between class periods.

“It personally makes me feel disgusted knowing that I was in the room prior to him doing that near the spot that I used to sit,” she said.

One parent who viewed the video questioned why the teacher did not use restroom facilities.

“I saw the video. It was really weird, and there was enough time for him to go to the restroom,” the parent said. “Per the children, this is a regular occurrence. My daughter’s friend, who is a junior, remembers being in his class and it always smelling weird.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
