Sidney Dorsey, ex-DeKalb sheriff who had Derwin Brown killed, dies in prison
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Sidney Dorsey, the former DeKalb County sheriff convicted of ordering the killing of the man who defeated him in the 2000 election, has died in prison. He was 86.
According to sources, Dorsey died around 6 p.m. Monday at Augusta State Medical Prison. A Georgia Department of Corrections official confirmed his death, saying Dorsey died of natural causes.
Dorsey was serving a life sentence for the murder of Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown 25 years ago.
In 2002, Dorsey and two others were convicted in Brown’s killing. Brown had just won a runoff election for sheriff, campaigning on a promise to root out corruption within the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
Brown was shot and killed outside his home on Dec. 15, 2000.
In a 2007 interview from state prison, Dorsey admitted to orchestrating the killing.
