Doomsday threats close dozens of Michigan schools
Students will be enjoying a longer than usual holiday break in 25 Michigan school districts after frazzled administrators decided to close schools Thursday and Friday to avoid holding classes when the Mayan calendar resets. This has less to do with actual doomsday fears and more about putting safety first, amid rumors that someone might choose Friday's apocalyptic association for a copycat assault on a school, just a week after the massacre in Sandy Hook.
Lapeer Community Schools Superintendent Matt Wandrie wrote a letter to parents stating that all threats of violence were investigated and proved false, but because the rumors had been such a serious distraction for teachers and students, classes were being canceled anyway. [Source]
