NBA — Mavericks Trade Anthony Davis to Wizards Ahead of Deadline

WASHINGTON — The Washington Wizards acquired 10-time All-Star forward Anthony Davis from the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday in a blockbuster eight-player trade just hours before the NBA’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, league sources said.

The Wizards sent a package of players and draft picks to Dallas in the deal. Washington received Davis, along with guards Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell and Dante Exum, while the Mavericks acquired forwards Khris Middleton and Marvin Bagley III, guards AJ Johnson and Malaki Branham, two future first-round draft picks and three second-round selections, sources told The Associated Press.

Davis, 32, has been limited by a left-hand ligament injury and has appeared in just 20 games this season for a Mavericks team below .500. He was averaging about 20 points and 11 rebounds before the injury.

The trade marks the end of Davis’ brief tenure in Dallas, which began last season when he was acquired in a deal that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers  a move that proved controversial among Mavericks fans and culminated in front-office changes.

For the Wizards, the acquisition of Davis follows a recent trade for veteran guard Trae Young as part of a broader effort to accelerate the team’s rebuild. Washington has struggled this season but views Davis and Young as foundational pieces for future contention.

The Mavericks, currently outside playoff position, gain draft capital and roster flexibility as they pivot toward a younger core around newly drafted prospect Cooper Flagg.

The move was among several roster changes across the league as teams finalized deals before the deadline, a period that saw veteran stars stay and move in a flurry of trades.
