FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Two 16-year-old girls died following a sledding accident in Frisco during a rare winter storm.

Authorities say Elizabeth “Lizzie” Angle, a sophomore at Wakeland High School and a standout soccer player, was riding on a sled being towed by a Jeep Wrangler on Sunday afternoon when the sled struck a curb and collided with a tree. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital.

Her best friend, Grace “Gracie” Brito, an All-Star cheerleader, was critically injured in the crash. She was taken off life support and died Tuesday, the Frisco Police Department and her family said. Brito’s family described her as a compassionate and generous young woman who valued teamwork and encouragement.

Both girls were 16 and had recently obtained their driver’s licenses, family members said. Brito was also registered as an organ donor.

Frisco police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, which occurred as icy conditions blanketed much of North Texas. The Denton County District Attorney’s Office will review the case to determine whether any charges are appropriate, authorities said.

Wakeland High School officials said counselors are available to support students and staff as the community mourns the loss.
