Man found in middle of I-285 after hit-and-run dies
Officer injured after swerving to miss man in road

Traffic was backed up for miles on Interstate 285 early Saturday moing after police closed lanes to investigate a hit-and-run that killed a man.

DeKalb County police said they began getting calls around 4:30 a.m. from drivers reporting a body in the middle of the interstate.

Officers said they think the man was crossing I-285 northbound, just past exit 40, when he was hit by a car.

Rescue crews took the man to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He later died.

”There was an officer that was heading northbound in his personal vehicle, and he swerved to avoid the body in the roadway and hit the median wall. He’s in fair condition. He’s in the local hospital as well, Lt. L.M. Richardson said.

Police said they believe the victim had pulled over to the shoulder in his gray Honda Accord before trying to cross the interstate.

Two passengers in the car were interviewed by officers.

A truck driver pulled over nearby told Channel 2 Action News reporter Sophia Choi that he was asleep and did not see what happened.

Police said they do not have a description of the car that initially hit the man.
