Gwinnett County School Buses Collide In Gwinnett

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A Gwinnett County elementary school bus headed to school was rear-ended Monday moing, Gwinnett police said.

The crash happened near a bus stop just after 9 a.m., police said.

A special needs Camp Creek Elementary school bus was stopped behind another bus, which was loading children at Rockbridge Road and Rockbridge Way, Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said. While the buses were stopped, a third bus, headed to Lilbu Middle School, struck the special needs bus, Ritter said.

”I just heard a loud noise, parent Lupe Garcia told Channel 2’s Manuel Bojorquez in Spanish.

Garcia said her son had just left the house for to board the first bus. That bus, which was loading children, was not affected by the crash.

Neither of two children on the special needs bus was injured, Ritter said. He said the driver and the monitor of the bus complained of injury but refused transportation to the hospital.

The Lilbu Middle School bus driver was treated at Gwinnett Medical Center for minor injuries, Ritter said. Ten of the 38 students riding that bus complained of back pain and were treated by Gwinnett firefighters at the scene. Police told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh the children were later taken to school on a different bus.

The Lilbu Middle School bus driver was cited for following too closely.
