Ga. GOP Seeks Limit Property Tax Increases
ATLANTA - A key Georgia Republican wants to limit the pace by which property taxes can rise.
House Republican Whip Ed Lindsey has prefiled legislation that would cap the increase to 3 percent a year so long as the property remains in the hands of the same owner.
Republicans at the state Capitol have tried for the last few years to rein in the growth of property taxes but have met resistance from local leaders and school officials who rely on the revenue.
Taxes are expected to be a major issue when lawmakers reconvene in January. A special panel has been weighing an overhaul to Georgia's tax code which could make changes to income, sales and corporate taxes.
