Ex-Fulton deputy sheriff Anthony Atwater sentenced for corruption
ATLANTA - A former Fulton County sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to six years in prison on federal corruption and drug charges.
Anthony Atwater was sentenced Monday on charges that he agreed to protect what he thought were cocaine deals in exchange for $4,000. He pleaded guilty in July.
Prosecutors said the 33-year-old deputy told FBI agents posing as drug dealers last year that he would show his badge in case other police officers interrupted the drug transactions.
Besides his prison term, Atwater was sentenced to four years of supervised release and ordered to perform community service.
The U.S. Attoey's office said federal agents have also investigated a report that Atwater illegally searched the home of Fulton County resident while in uniform
