CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- A former caregiver was sentenced Wednesday for stealing $50,000 from an elderly woman.

Patricia Henderson was sentenced to 10 years for stealing the money from the late 89-year-old Catherine Mashbu. Henderson used the money to support a gambling habit.

At a Canton courtroom, Henderson said she planned on making up for the thefts.

"I didn't mean no harm to nobody, but I had intentions of paying it back," Henderson said.

Mashbu's family said they hope no other family has to endure what they went through.

"It's just disappointing in humankind, you know, thinking that you have someone looking after your relatives. It's just very sad to think that this goes on," said Mashbu’s daughter-in-law, Lynn.

Henderson will serve six months in the Cherokee County Jail.
