Deputy Ronnie Smith responding to call dies in crash
Butts County official said that a deputy died in a car accident while responding to a call of a fight Saturday night. Police said 49-year-old Ronnie Smith lost control of his cruiser around 10:30 p.m. on Biles Road, near Four Points Road, and hit two trees.
Sheriff Gene Pope said Smith's cruiser dropped off onto the shoulder of the road and Smith overcorrected, causing his cruiser to skid into two trees and killing the deputy instantly.
"It was a slight hill with a little bit of a tu, but, you now, officers have to multi-task when they're on some calls. They have to talk on the radio, they have to watch their speed, they have to watch for animals at night, they have to look at the headlines how much is illuminated," Pope said.
Smith has been with the department since 2007.
