Workers Allegedly Put Kitten in Break Room Freezer
Authorities in Gwinnett County say they’re investigating after at least two employees at an outdoor adventure store allegedly put a stray kitten in the store’s break room freezer.
Georgia Newsday leaed of the allegations from workers who say they’re simply disgusted. They didn’t want to be identified because they work at the store, but they say they want answers about why a kitten that was still alive was put in the freezer in the store’s break room.
Detectives say they’re taking a closer look at what could be a case of animal cruelty. The alleged incident took place at the Bass Pro Shop at the Discover Mills Mall in Lawrenceville two weeks ago.
Employees tell reporters they found three kittens behind the store. They say two were taken home. A third was deemed sickly, and that kitten was reportedly taken inside the store to the break room and put in a freezer. The kitten didn’t survive the frigid temperatures.
As word spread through the Bass Pro Shop store, investigators were called on Friday.
Janice Vollmer of Pup and Cat Co, a local group that helps foster strays and pets in need of a new home, calls what allegedly happened inside the store’s break room torture.
”If the pet is sickly, animal control at least can humanely euthanize them, and not put a pet in the freezer.
Bass Pro Shop managers confirm there is an investigation underway, but when pressed for details, they directed our questions about the incident to their corporate office. Calls to that office were not retued Monday.
The accusations have animal advocates asking why such a thing would happen.
”There’s rescue groups like ours that will take them if there's room-- if the shelter's have room, or even friends might take them, said Vollmer. ”But to do something like that, it’s just not right.
The case is under investigation. No suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made.
