DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A DeKalb County teen who suffered a serious brain injury in a snowboarding accident was discharged from a hospital.

Officials from the Shepherd Center say Thomas Sowell, 15, was released Thursday. Sowell's family says prayer and the excellent work of doctors allowed their son to go home early.

Sowell was snowboarding in Asheville, North Carolina with Boy Scout Troop 77 and was on a beginner's slope, wearing a helmet when he fell, suffering a brain injury.

After he woke up from a coma at Grady Hospital, he was transferred to the Shepherd Center to finish his recovery.

Sowell will begin rehabilitation next week.

Sowell is a student at Lakeside High School.
