ATLANTA -- A teen was killed amid more than 100,000 people gathered in downtown Atlanta for New Year’s Eve festivities on Friday night, police said.

The teen was stabbed outside the Five Points MARTA transit station near Underground Atlanta only 15 minutes into the new year, MARTA police said. Witnesses said the stabbing occurred after a fight broke out.

Nearby partygoers said they were stunned, considering the heightened security for the 22nd annual Peach Drop countdown. One woman said she would stay closer to the three 14-year-olds she was with.

”I didn’t expect this. It’s very frightening, Tracy Henson said.
