Stone Mountain man Detray Shivers charged in death of 2-year-old nephew
The uncle of a toddler who was found dead Monday moing in Stone Mountain has been charged with murder according to the DeKalb County Police.
The Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death a homicide, saying Kamarri Lewis, 2, could not have shot himself. Detray Shivers, 25, is being held in the DeKalb County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afteoon.
Police say a family member found the boy around 10:00 a.m. on Monday, but by the time he got to him it was too late. The child was in a home on 3rd Street.
"The child was reportedly discovered by a family member, deceased from an apparent gun shot wound," said Captain Stephen Fore with DeKalb County Police. "Detectives are currently interviewing persons of interest and attempting to determine what took place."
Initially police thought it may have been a self inflicted wound, but a gun found inside a storm drain right in front of the home led them to investigate further.
"That leads our speculation to make sure we investigate fully to find out exactly what took place," said Fore.
