An Atlanta police officer was seriously injured when his car was struck by a motorist accused of driving drunk.

Police Officer Osbert Beckles was being treated Saturday at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition. He was expected to survive.

A spokesperson for the Georgia State Patrol said the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday while Beckles was working traffic near a ramp for Interstate 75. A 2011 Hyundai Sonata slammed into the officer's car.

Investigators accuse the driver, 45-year-old Scott Eugene Welker, of trying to flee from the scene. He has been charged with driving under the influence and was being held at the Fulton County Jail on $58,000.

During his first appearance Saturday, it was revealed Welker was on Federal probation. He was still in the Fulton County Jail as of Saturday evening.
