Savannah Notifies Workers of Layoffs

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The city of Savannah is eliminating the jobs of 57 current employees and says it's offering another 553 workers an incentive to take early retirement.

City officials say the 57 workers will remain on the payroll for the next 45 days, and each will be given a chance to apply for a vacant position.

The retirement incentive package is being offered to 553 employees, with the hope that at least 187 will accept. The city has about 2,500 employees.

Acting City Manager Rochelle Small-Toney notified the City Council as early as November that the 2011 budget included a reduction of full-time positions. The city trimmed 89 jobs, but only 57 were still staffed.
