PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. — A grand jury has indicted the mayor pro tem of Port Wentworth on charges that he lied about a past conviction for forgery.

The indictment retued last week charged Vincent Hogan of falsely swearing a notice of candidacy and affidavit, a requirement to run for office.

Hogan was sentenced in 1999 for the exchange, transfer and delivery of counterfeit money. His probation sentence expired in 2004.

Under state law, people convicted of a crime cannot run for office until a decade after completing their criminal sentences. Hogan told The Savannah Moing News that he believed he was eligible to run because he was swo into office more than 10 years after pleading guilty.

Prosecutors said Hogan was convicted of two forgery counts in Charleston, S.C., in 1998.
