Police: Wrong-Way Driver Causes Crash, Killing 1 in Gwinnett County
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Police said a wrong-way driver caused a deadly crash Saturday night in Gwinnett County that left several people trapped inside their vehicles.
The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Rockbridge Road.
Police believe a drunk driver caused the three-car accident, which killed one woman.
Witnesses said they heard the loud crash and saw people trapped inside the cars. Channel 2’s George Howell talked to two witnesses who jumped in to try and help.
Scott Christopher, a witness who happens to be an Army staff sergeant, rushed over to help the male passenger in her car. "Me and another guy, we tried to open the door. So we crashed, we broke the window. I reached my hand into the vehicle to unlock the back door. And then I stabilized the passengers until the firefighters came," he said.
Christopher credits his Army training for knowing what to do to save a person's life. Two women inside a red van walked away with minor injuries. The woman who allegedly caused the accident is in critical condition.
"We had a possible drunk driver coming eastbound on Jimmy Carter. They crossed over the median on Rockbridge Road, striking one vehicle, and a third vehicle was ultimately involved," Detective James Flanagan with Gwinnett County Police said.
Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to pull several victims out of the mangled wreckage. People nearby who heard the crash rushed in to try and help as best they could.
"He was going to help her, and I was trying to help him open the door... We tried to get the lady out the back seat but we couldn't." Fermin Orduna said.
