Police: Teen Joshua Staley involved in deadly crash ran light

A Fayette County teenager died when the car he was riding in was struck by another teenager who ran a red light, deputies said.

Joshua Staley, 17, drove through a red light on Highway 54 at South Sandy Creek Road on Friday afteoon and slammed into a Honda Accord driven by 18-year-old Bismarck Delarosa, officials said.

Malcom Williams, 17, was in the passenger seat when Staley’s car hit the Honda at a high rate of speed, investigators told Channel 2’s Jeff Dore. 

Williams was taken to Piedmont-Fayette Hospital, where he died. Delarosa was taken by helicopter ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was listed in critical condition on Monday afteoon.

Staley received minor injuries in the crash and refused treatment, deputies said.  All three men were wearing their seat belts.

Investigators are still working to determine charges filed in the case and they need to interview Staley one more time. Deputies said it did not appear Staley was distracted at the time of the crash.

Williams would have started his senior year at Fayette County High School on Monday. Staley is a student at Whitewater High School.

Deputies said it’s the third fatal wreck in unincorporated Fayette County this year.
