The Atlanta Police Department's bomb squad is investigating a suspicious device found at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Inteational Airport.

The bottom level of the parking deck at the north terminal was briefly shut down.

Police spokesman Otis Redmond says the package -- belonging to a retired pilot  -- was found in a piece of luggage at a curbside check-in area Monday moing.

Authorities say the device appeared to be a pipe with a flare inside of it.

Police say the retired pilot told investigators the flare was part of an equipment package he carried with him when he was planning to fly his own plane.

Police say the device has been destroyed.
