Police Chief’s Wife Callie Dorsey, Steals Thousands From City
MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- The wife of the McDonough police chief has pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from the city.
On Monday, she will find out if she’s going to prison.
Callie Dorsey, wife of McDonough police chief, Preston Dorsey, was fired from her job as a city clerk in August 2009. Her lawyer told channel 2’s Diana Davis Dorsey admits to stealing nearly $7,000 from the city.
”She’s cooperated from the beginning and said she took the money, Dorsey’s lawyer, Christopher Chapman, said.
He said Dorsey owned up to stealing the $6,700, but the city said it was much more like $47,000.
The Henry County District Attoey began investigating Dorsey more than 15 months ago after a tip from city officials.
At least 25 times, over a nearly 10-month period, Dorsey diverted city money to her own accounts, DA Tommy Floyd said.
On Monday, Dorsey will face a Henry County judge. Her theft charge carries a possible penalty of one to 15 years in prison. The judge may also order restitution to the city.
But the money may be long gone. Chapman said Dorsey now works for just $8 an hour, but he wouldn’t say where.
Chapman said he doesn’t know why she did it.
”All I can say is people sometimes make very bad decisions and made poor choices, and this is one of those cases, Chapman said.
Floyd said his preliminary recommendation for Dorsey’s sentence is 10 years, with two to serve in jail. He said the police chief is not expected to be charged.
As for the condition of the couple’s marriage, Chapman said he would not comment on the couple’s personal life.
