Police arrest Nicolas Ross Smith in murder of Morehouse student
Nicolas Ross Smith is accused of shooting and killing a Morehouse College student.

Police arrested a man accused of killing a Morehouse College student near the Atlanta University Center.

Police took Nicolas Ross Smith, 20, into custody in Stockbridge on Thursday afteoon. Smith is charged with murder and aggravated assault.

Investigators said Smith shot Joseph Gibbs, 23, and a second man while they sat in a car at the intersection of Parsons and Webster streets last Thursday. Gibbs’ passenger was shot in the hand. A third person ran from the vehicle after the shooting.

Police said the pair was targeted by Smith and a second suspect. Detectives told Young they have identified the second suspect but he is not in custody. They do not  think the shooting was random.

Morehouse President John Wilson sent a letter to students after the shooting about the college’s efforts to fight crime along with Atlanta police.

”I am also committed to making sure that we, at Morehouse, do our part to create an environment defined by a high-level of personal responsibility and zero tolerance for violence, Wilson said.

Smith is in custody at the Fulton County Jail.
