Atlanta police have made an arrest in the theft of tens of thousands of dollars from a Buckhead elementary school’s Parent Teachers Association.

Maryam Arjomand, 48, tued herself in to police Monday moing. She was charged with a felony count of theft by taking.

According to E. Rivers Elementary School, Arjomand diverted money meant for the school’s PTA to her account at a Sandy Springs bank where she worked. Last month, a PTA co-president alerted police of the missing funds after an audit uncovered missing check payments.

The PTA’s tax retu for last year showed donors gave the organization contribution gifts and grants of $61,000 and fundraising events took in $53,000. It spent $117,000 on projects including building and ground improvements, cultural arts, staff and teacher appreciation, teacher training and science workshops.

Last week, GA Daily News was at PTA meeting, where the organization’s president explained that a parent stole more than $55,000.

”One of the most disturbing things about this case is the money was taken by a trusted individual. She had access to the money before it was deposited into the account, PTA spokeswoman Molly Epstein said.

The PTA said officials were unaware the money even existed until she recently retued $50,000.

According to a police report, Arjomand worked at Signature Bank in Sandy Springs from 1995 until earlier this month. She is also a co-owner.
