Adairsville police chief said the officer found dead inside his patrol car was a 14-year veteran of law enforcement and had won numerous awards for his dedication to his work.

Lt. James Matthew Fowler, who was not on duty, was found dead Friday afteoon in a suspected suicide. A Bartow County deputy coroner pronounced Fowler dead at 5:45 p.m., according to media reports.

”Matt and I were more than colleagues, we were Division Commanders together and personal friends and law enforcement was his life, Adairsville Chief A.E. Gillman said in an emailed statement late Saturday. ”I will always remember him for the things he has brought to APD as well as what he has brought to my personal life.

Fowler, a Rome native, graduated from Rome High School and worked for Adairsville police for over two years, Gillman said. Fowler previously worked for Floyd County, Rome, East Point and Euharlee police departments. In 2008, he was named Officer of the Year in Rome.

In Adairsville, Fowler was the criminal investigations division commander, a training officer and public information officer, Gillman said. Fowler also taught law enforcement classes and served on a child fatality review board, the chief said.

”He always took great effort and personal fortitude in ensuring the prosecution of those criminals who prey upon children, Gillman said.

Fowler is survived by his wife and two sons. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced
