Murrayville Teen Barratt Young injured in homemade grenade explosion
A 16-year-old boy suffered bus to his face, hands and abdominal area after handling a homemade explosive device.
According to the Hall County Sheriff's Office, the teen was handling a World War II era "pineapple" style grenade that had been filled with an unknown explosive substance. Deputies said that kind of grenade is available as a novelty item after being rendered inert.
The device detonated at a home on Underwood Drive, and the teen was driven by a friend who was also present to a Marathon gas station. From there, he was taken to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, the Sheriff's Office said.
In a search of the home, deputies and members of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team found more materials to make similar devices.
Deputies also searched a home on Kanaday Road and found two inert grenades.
The Sheriff's Office said they do not believe the incident is related to domestic terrorism.
Barratt Duncan Young, 18, was arrested and charged with possessing and manufacturing and explosive device, reckless conduct, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and alcohol consumption under 21.
