Michelle Nunn leads in new SurveyUSA poll

In a new poll by Survey USA for 11Alive News, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Georgia Michelle Nunn is leading her Republican opponent David Perdue by three points. This is the first time the Democrat has a lead in polls since a Landmark poll from Sept. 11.

In really good news for Nunn, the survey gives her 48 percent of the vote, to Perdue’s 45 percent, placing the Democrat quite near the 50 percent mark needed to win the general election on Nov. 4th without going into a runoff.

The poll found 4 percent still undecided and 3 percent went with Libertarian Amanda Swafford.  Swafford’s lower number is also positive for Nunn, because in case of a runoff some of the Libertarian vote usually crosses over to the Republican candidate. It appears that if the elections were held today, even with the Libertarian vote Perdue would be neck and neck with the Democrat.

Survey USA talked to 563 Georgia likely voters, and the poll has a +/- 4.2 percent margin of error.  It was conducted Oct. 10-13, 2014.

This is the first Survey USA poll conducted after the Oct. 7th debate, where some analysts believe Nunn did better than Perdue. She might have surprised some voters with her relaxed yet assertive style, and she seemed very knowledgeable on all issues.

Nunn appears to have gained votes among women – 50 percent to Perdue’s 41, which is important because women are expected to vote in larger numbers than men in November. She also surpassed Perdue in the Hispanic vote – 50 percent to Perdue’s 40. In previous polls, Hispanics were tuing out for the Republican.  Nunn is still fighting it out for the independents, who prefer Perdue by 43 percent to 37.
