Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is heading out to assess the city's response to a large storm that has covered roads and neighborhoods with several inches of snow.

Reed says the storm may be the largest snow event that Atlanta has seen in a decade. The city started gearing up for the storm on Thursday, increasing its fleet of snow trucks from 8 to 19 and getting 500 tons of salt and sand to dump on icy streets.

Reed also declared a state of emergency in the city and is encouraging Atlantans to stay home.

He says the city is working with state transportation officials to urge drivers to slow down. Reed says Atlanta police have handled more than 450 calls in the last 40 hours, more than 240 of those related to traffic incidents.
