A Butts County police camera captured a drug suspects run from the law. Police said the suspect crossed a busy highway and was struck by a tractor trailer.

Butts County deputies stopped the man for speeding and said the found cocaine.

A camera captured the man's desperate and near fatal dash into the south bound lanes of Interstate 75. He was hit by a semi and dragged more than 100 feet.

The sheriff said it started as a routine traffic stop. Charles Antonio Kelly of Climax, Georgia was accused of speeding and following too close.

Right away, deputies said they noticed that Kelly was acting anxious. Officers said they told him they would just write him a warning, but he kept putting his hands in the air -- even on his head -- and acting very suspiciously.

Deputies asked for permission to search his car, but Kelly declined. They brought over a drug-sniffing K9 and walked the around the Kelly's car. The K9 alerted the deputy to the possible presence of narcotics.

After a search of the car, deputies say they found cocaine hidden in a lunch box.

The deputies said they were worried that the suspect might try to bolt. So they placed handcuffs on him, put shackles around his ankles, told him to sit on the ground and waited for a transport unit to pick him up.

Deputies said when they turn their back on Kelly, that's when he jumped up and made a dash for the highway. Just then, officers said the driver of a tractor-trailer slammed on his breaks but could not avoid the man.

Investigators said Kelly suffered serious injuries to his face and head. Amazingly, he is expected to live.

The sheriff said Kelly will be charged with possession of cocaine.

Deputies said they couldn't put Kelly in the back of the patrol cars because both cars had police dogs in them.

The sheriff said all the deputies on the scene followed the book.
