Man Barricaded With Woman, Child Surrenders in Cobb County

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- A seven-hour SWAT standoff ended after a gunman surrendered to police, police said.

The incident started just after 8 p.m. Monday at the Columns at Akers Mill apartment complex in Cobb County.

Cobb County police initially received a domestic-related call and the situation escalated, Cobb County police spokesman Dana Pierce said. Neighbors noticed a man walking up and down Akers Mill Road carrying a shotgun, but when police arrived, they said, he went inside an apartment.

The man barricaded himself inside the unit with a woman and a 4-year-old boy, police said. Officers tried to talk him down, but he refused to speak to them, police said.

A neighbor said the building was evacuated, and she could hear the man throwing a fit.

”He was throwing glasses, throwing mirrors. He was just acting. He's not in his right mind, the woman said.

The man eventually walked out of the apartment early Tuesday. Police said the woman and child were unharmed.
