Mail Room Clerk Lawanda Harkness Accused Of Taking Tax Money

ATLANTA - A Fulton County grand jury retued a 12-count indictment against Lawanda Harkness, charging her with stealing money orders intended to pay state tax obligations of six Georgia taxpayers.

The indictment announced Monday alleges that Harkness, an employee in the mailroom of the Georgia Department of Revenue in 2008, took money orders payable to the Department of Revenue and altered them to change the payee to herself.

Harkness was indicted for six counts of theft by taking, each a felony punishable by one to 15 years imprisonment. She's also charged with six counts of first degree forgery, a felony punishable by one to 10 years imprisonment.
