Jaywalking Mom Raquel Nelson Sentenced In Son's Hit-And-Run Death
Raquel Nelson

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- A mother whose child was killed in a hit-and-run crash was sentenced Tuesday moing.

Raquel Nelson was sentenced to 12 months of probation and 40 hours of community service in the death of her 4-year-old son.

The crash happened in April 2010 as Nelson and several children stepped off a bus on Austell Road at night. A jury convicted Nelson of walking outside a crosswalk.

The driver, 47-year-old Jerry Guy, was arrested the following day after fleeing the scene. He was charged with three felony counts, including first-degree homicide by vehicle. He spent six months in jail under a plea deal.

Nelson could have spent more time than her son’s killer, originally facing three years in jail. In court, the judge gave her the option of either accepting the probation and community service or taking a new trial.
