A Houston County woman killed her 10-year-old son before taking her own life in a Clayton County motel, authorities said Monday.

County police discovered the bodies of Donne Marie Slonaker and her son at the Motel 6 just off Ga. 138, police spokeswoman Sonja Sanchez said.

A police investigation indicated that the mother shot her son in the back of the head before shooting herself with the stolen weapon. Slonaker, 36, had appeared "depressed" when she checked in at 7 p.m. Sunday, a hotel employee told police.

When Slonaker failed to check out Monday moing, the hotel manager knocked at her door, only to get no answer. He found the bodies after entering the room and called authorities at 11:30 a.m.

The weapon had been reported missing by a neighbor of Slonaker's in Houston County.
