Heat advisory continues for Georgia
ATLANTA - Hot weather is continuing around Georgia, and the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for northe and central parts of the state.
Today will likely be the hottest day of the year in Atlanta as the thermometer is expected to rise into the upper 90s. The hot temperatures mixed with high humidity will cause heat index values of 105° and higher in metro Atlanta.
A Heat Advisory is in effect for most of north Georgia including metro Atlanta from 11 a.m. today through 5 a.m. Wednesday. This means dangerous heat is expected during these hours and you should limit your time outdoors in the direct sunlight.
CBS Atlanta's Meteorologist Justin Lock says, "It's always a good idea to remind people to take extra precautions in this kind of heat. Your body does not do a good job of cooling itself during heat like this."
Lock says to follow these safety tips:
Stay out of direct sunlight
Stay indoors in the a.c. as much as you can
If outdoors, wear lightweight and light colored clothing
Drink plenty of water
Check on the young and elderly
Keep pets indoors and provide plenty of water
To make matters worse a code orange air quality alert is also in effect this afteoon for poor air quality.
The state Environmental Protection Division says the air quality index for metro Atlanta on Tuesday is 108, an orange alert with the air considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.
This means those that are sensitive to high ozone, like active adults and children that suffer from respiratory diseases, should limit their time outdoors this afteoon.
