Gwinnett Flooding Causes Road Closure
Gwinnett County closed Oak Brook Parkway for several hours Friday due to flooding.
The flooding occurred at Oak Brook Parkway at Pirkle.
Officials with the Gwinnett County Storm Water Division say the flooding was actually weather related.
The water that flooded the road came from the heavy rain Thursday night.
Officials say the county hired a contractor to come in a shore up drain pipes in the area. That company was putting a lining on the pipes that requires it to be cured for a day or so. To do that, they stop up and flood the drain pipe so the liner is against the pipes. As a way to compensate for the blocked drain, they put a pump in place to drain the excess water. At some point during the night, the pump failed.
Crews later brought in additional pumps to drain the water.
The road has been reopened to traffic, but there's only one lane in each direction due to mud and muck.
