Georgia Tech Student Robbed at Gunpoint
Atlanta police are looking for answers after a Georgia Tech student was robbed near the campus.
It happened Tuesday night inside a parking deck at Tenside Apartments on Northside Drive.
Authorities say the student, Jeffery Portman, and Virginia Beasley had just gotten out of their cars when someone in a ski mask approached them at gunpoint and demanded their property on the third level of the parking deck.
Police say no one was injured.
Portman is the grandson of famed Georgia architect John Portman.
The location of the robbery was the same place where Patrick Whaley was shot in May of 2009.
Residents at the Tenside Apartments say crime is common in the area and are doing what they can to stay safe.
Investigators are trying to determine how the gunman accessed the third level of the parking deck – a secure area. Major Christopher Leighty of the Atlanta Police Department said it’s possible he tailgated another driver into the deck.
Atlanta police are working with the Georgia Tech Police Department to investigate the shooting.
Police are searching for two suspects in the robbery. They are both black males. The shooter was said to be around 6 feet tall with a slim build. Investigators say the suspect drove away with a second black male in a green-colored SUV, last seen heading southbound on Howell Mill Road.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Atlanta Police Department at 404-577-8477.
