SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol told GA Daily News that a Georgia Tech professor was killed after he was struck by a car while riding his bike along a Florida highway.

Kurt Lang Frankel, 33, of Atlanta, was biking along U.S. Highway 98 in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. Saturday when he was hit by a car.

Troopers said a 19-year-old driver hit the back of Frankel’s bike and knocked him off.

Frankel was taken to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries, according to investigators.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Frankel was an associate professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech.

Troopers said charges were still pending against the driver.
