An Army soldier stationed at Fort Benning has been charged with killing his infant son after the baby died from severe brain injuries.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that police charged 28-year-old Shane E. Hinkson with murder late Friday. He serves as a sergeant in the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division.

Police Lt. Lynn Joiner says that 8-month-old Alexander Cabanayan was rushed to the emergency room by his mother on New Year's Day after she found him unresponsive. Authorities say the infant's injuries may have resulted from shaken baby syndrome.

The child was taken in critical condition to an Atlanta hospital and died Friday.

It was unknown if Hinkson had an attoey. He waived an initial court appearance.
