Georgia House delegation votes yes on CRomnibus, except for two Republicans and two Democrats
U.S. Reps. Paul Broun (R-Ga-10), Hank Johnson (D-Ga-04), John Lewis (D-Ga-05), and Austin Scott (R-Ga-08) were the only opposing votes among the 14 Georgia House representatives in a push for $1.1 trillion in 2015 Federal Spending, or the CR- Omnibus bill, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives late Thursday night 219-206.
The massive legislation will fund the federal govement through September 2015. Among other things, the bill does the following: bans using federal funds to perform abortions, funds the Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare) but with no additional spending, allows for much larger donations to political campaigns from wealthy donors, increases funding for the Centers for Disease Control (Ebola-related and other), allocates $5.4 billion in additional Ebola funding across several agencies, funds the Department of Homeland Security until February (immigration related), and decreases funding for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Most conservative pundits have criticized the bill and lawmakers who came out in support of it. The Republican right was partial to passing a short-term continuing resolution that would only fund the govement until February or March. The 114th Congress is staring on Jan. 3, 2014, with a significant Republican majority in the House and a majority in the Senate which would allow the GOP to get a more conservative spending bill.
On the Democratic side, the House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) urged her party to oppose the bill because of the campaign finance measure and what she called a "bank bailout," a reversal of some financial regulatory reforms enacted in 2010, included in the CRomnibus. In an earlier procedural vote on Thursday, no Democrat voted in favor of it. Just a few hours later, 57 Democrats supported the measure.
