It's been a year since a popular Cobb County teacher was murdered. As of Friday night, there have been no arrests in the case. Students, staffers and parents all came together to mark the somber anniversary.

"Perhaps my time has been too brief; don't lengthen it now with grief." Student Sarah Moore, 14, read a poem in memory of her teacher Elizabeth Bowie.

Bowie was found dead in her Smya home July 31, 2008. Police believe Bowie's boyfriend, Juan Lazaro, killed her and is still on the run. Dozens gathered Friday night to remember the 28-year-old teacher.

"Her cheerfulness in the moings -- she was really able to brighten your day," said Moore.

That's what I miss; just talking to her. I still have her number in my phone," said teacher Kris Moore.

Those who knew Bowie are concentrating on her life - not death.

"She was really a great person," said Sarah Moore. It must have been hard news to swallow? "It was, especially knowing she had been making plans to help people after the Tsunami."

Students said she taught by example -- traveling to Jordan and Africa on missionary trips.

Bowie started teaching social studies at Marietta Middle School in 2003. Students, staff and parents said she'll be remembered most for the way she connected with kids.

Memorial organizer Karla Moore said, "They saw her walk the walk that she talked and she was always very honest with them.

On Friday, the group plans on releasing balloons after dark in Elizabeth's honor.

"Lift up your hearts; God wanted me now; set me free," reads Sarah Moore.

Lazaro has been charged with malice murder. Police believe he fled to Mexico where U.S. marshals are now involved in the search for him.
