FAA Head Meets with Ga. Air Traffic Controllers

ATLANTA - The head of the Federal Aviation Administration says he's infuriated that air traffic controllers have been caught sleeping on the job.

During a visit to Georgia on Monday, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt also ruled out allowing them to nap during work breaks.

Babbitt spoke to about 50 agency employees Monday during the start of a tour with Paul Rinaldi, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.

Authorities have identified at least five instances where air traffic controllers have fallen asleep on the job since March. The latest incident happened Saturday moing at a facility that handles high altitude air traffic for much of Florida, portions of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Babbitt said the FAA is adjusting the way it schedules employees in an attempt to reduce fatigue.
