Ex-NFL QB Kordell Stewart Pleads Guilty In Alpharetta

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Former NFL quarterback Kordell Stewart has pleaded guilty to traffic charges that landed him in the Alpharetta City Jail.

Alpharetta police arrested the former Steeler’s standout May 11 on Windward Parkway.

A police report said Stewart was driving 21 miles over the speed limit and was driving with a suspended license. After investigators leaed that he had a warrant out of Conyers, Stewart was arrested.

”I had a hiccup, a slipup, like we all do sometimes, Stewart told Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik outside the Alpharetta Municipal Court. ”Got caught, so now I’ve got to pay my fine and take care of it and move forward.

Stewart told Petchenik that he was on his phone that day with someone working on his house and not paying attention to the speed limit. The outstanding warrant, he said, was for forgetting to show up to court in Conyers for a ticket he received because the windows on his vehicle were too tinted.

”Just take care of your business, he said. ”If you take care of your business, your business won’t take care you.

Stewart said he was humiliated when officers hauled him off to jail.

”It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life because it was something that caught me completely off guard, he said.

Petchenik was the only reporter in court on Tuesday as Stewart pleaded guilty to a reduced speeding charge and a charge of driving with an expired license. Court officials said the charge was reduced because Stewart had his license reinstated. A judge sentenced Stewart to a six-hour driving course.

”Because of my position and people knowing me, I’m not above the law, he said. ”I have to abide by it like everyone else does.
