Douglas County Man Jorge Narvaez Killed by Villa Rica Officers After Domestic Dispute Spills Onto I-20
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A domestic dispute that began in Carroll County ended with police shooting and killing a man on Interstate 20 in Douglas County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI identified the man as Jorge Narvaez, 52, of Carrollton. The agency said the Villa Rica Police Department requested that it investigate the officer-involved shooting.
According to the GBI, the incident began around 2:25 p.m. on Feb. 13, when Narvaez was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife and another person. As the two attempted to leave in a vehicle, Narvaez followed them in a separate car.
The GBI said multiple witnesses called 911 to report the two vehicles driving erratically.
Shawn Bennett told 11Alive he saw the vehicles on Bar J. Road in Temple.
“We were driving home and we saw the two cars kind of going back and forth battling each other and we decided to follow to be nosey,” Bennett said.
Bennett’s mother said one vehicle appeared to be trying to run the other off the road. Surveillance video from a nearby homeowner showed the vehicles braking abruptly and stopping in the roadway. Gunshots could be heard in the background.
Authorities later located both vehicles about 20 miles away on I-20 in Douglas County near the Post Road exit. Video obtained by 11Alive showed a man outside a vehicle holding what appeared to be a gun.
The GBI said that after both vehicles stopped, Narvaez exited his car armed with a firearm and walked toward his wife’s vehicle and a responding officer.
Two Villa Rica officers fired their weapons, striking Narvaez multiple times, the GBI said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic cameras from the Georgia Department of Transportation showed heavy backups as eastbound lanes of I-20 were blocked. As of about 11:30 p.m., both the interstate and Post Road remained closed.
Narvaez’s body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review.
The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
