Dekalb police charge Antoine Hood with murder of teacher after reporting her suicide

Rockdale County school officials confirm 28 year old Candace McGriff was a physical education teacher at C.J. Hicks Elementary in Conyers. Her photo along with advice for parents about sharing the news of her death with children is listed on the school's website.

DeKalb police say 30-year-old Antoine Hood was waiting on the balcony of an apartment off of Hillandale Drive in Lithonia after he called 911 Tuesday afteoon. According to the police report, Hood led officers to the couple's bedroom where McGriff was unresponsive on the floor next to a gun and a large hole in the wall.

Police say she'd been shot in the chest. They say he hood was very calm as he told officers his fiancée shot her after he told her he was ending their relationship.

Hood was questioned, and then released. But police say the autopsy proved McGriff did not shoot herself. Arrest warrants were secured Thursday. DeKalb's fugitive squad took him into custody Friday moing when he pulled up to the apartment in a car with a woman. He's being held at the DeKalb County Jail charged with murder.

McGriff taught at Hicks Elementary for four years. Schools officials say she was an inspiration to students and teachers. Grief counselors will be on hand Monday moing when children and teachers retu from Winter break
