Decision Expected On Georgia Power Rate Increase

ATLANTA - Utility regulators will soon decide whether Georgia Power can raise electricity rates for its 2.4 million customers.

The Public Service Commission plans to vote Tuesday on whether the Southe Co. subsidiary can raise prices over three years.

The firm's latest proposal would result in a $15 increase on the monthly bills of typical residential customer by 2013. Customers must also pay additional charges next year to finance the construction of a new nuclear power plant in easte Georgia.

Georgia Power asked in July for one of its largest rate increases in recent history. The company said it needed to cope with slumping sales and the cost of upgrading power plants. Critics have argued that Georgia Power should cut its profit margin instead.
