Columbus Soup Kitchen's Turkeys Stolen On Christmas Eve

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Salvation Army says thieves broke into a freezer at the organization's soup kitchen in Columbus, taking frozen turkeys and chicken parts the day before Christmas.

Mac Peterson, a cook and assistant manager at the shelter, says a Christmas Eve meal still was provided for 93 people, with the help of a last-minute donation of sliced turkey.

A police report shows Peterson reported the theft after arriving at the shelter about 5 a.m. Friday. Items reported taken from the freezer included three 15-pound turkeys, 40 pounds of frozen chicken legs and 40 pounds of chicken wings.

Police found a cut lock lying next to the freezer.

Peterson says the same freezer was targeted on the day before Thanksgiving.
