Authorities say the all clear has been given at Kennesaw State University after civil war relics found in the Social Sciences building prompted an evacuation of the building as a precaution.

In a statement released Monday afteoon, KSU officials said the civil war relics were found on the third floor of the building and were deemed a potential hazard. KSU police then ordered the evacuation and its perimeter area of 100 feet.

The Cobb County Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit (EOD) and Army Ordinance Disposal teams were called in to help remove the device. At about 1 p.m., authorities say the all clear was given for the building, and students were allowed to retu to their classes, which resumed at 2 p.m. in the social sciences building.

The university says the civil war relics, which included two cannon balls that were in a display case in a key-card, access-only room on the building's third floor, have been on display there for about three years.  The display was part of a collection within KSU's Center for the Study of the Civil War Era after a donation from a private individual.

The relics were removed from the building.  The university says a new faculty member raised conces that were brought to the attention of KSU officials on Monday moing.
