Atlanta Police Expanding Video Surveillance
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Police Department will soon step up surveillance with a new video integration center designed to compile and analyze footage from thousands of public and private security cameras around the city.
Officials say the venture will integrate data supplied by private entities such as CNN, America's Mart and Midtown Blue as well as public agencies such as the Federal Reserve, MARTA and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
David Wilkinson, president of the Atlanta Police Foundation, says the center will use software that can identify suspicious activity and guide officers to the scene of a crime in progress.
The system is modeled after one used in Chicago. The American Civil Liberties Union says that system is becoming a threat to personal privacy.
